GoBuyPlants Garden Bushes Blue 3 gal sku-14920601074

GoBuyPlants Endless Summer® Bloomstruck hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bloomstruck' 'PIIHM-II') is a compact, deciduous shrub sold in a 3 gal pot under Garden Bushes. It blooms on old and new wood. Its dark green, serrated leaves have red veins, grow on red-purple stems and turn red-purple in fall.

Soil pH affects the mophead flowers: acidic soil produces violet-Blue blooms, while alkaline soil produces deep rose blooms. The flowers are not fragrant but attract butterflies and other pollinators. Best flowering occurs in part sun and rich, moist, well-drained soil. The plant originated in East Asia and grows 3 to 4 feet tall with a spread of 4 to 5 feet; allow 4 feet for spacing.

It is suited to USDA zones 5 to 9 and flowers in summer. Maintenance needs are medium. It is resistant to powdery mildew, though bud blight, wilt, leaf spot and mildew can occur; aphids are an occasional problem. Mulch to retain moisture and protect it over winter, and prune after flowering if needed.

It can be planted as an accent or in group plantings, borders, foundation plantings, hedges, containers or woodland gardens, alongside hibiscus, itea or azalea. Image credits list a photoset by F. D.
