Snapshots of the Past reproduces historical maps, photographs and prints restored from Library of Congress archives on archival paper with pigmented inks, intended to last a lifetime and be passed down. Founded in 2001, it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints.
Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, enabled inexpensive mass production of prints.
The Library of Congress launched its American Memory pilot in 1989; that project laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections about American cultural history. The company's other subjects include holiday posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
Its retro-style prints can be displayed at home, in a study or at work, or given as gifts.
