Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past makes reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of online customers. It was selected as a vendor for the 2008 White House redecoration project.

The prints use archival paper and pigmented inks and are intended to last for generations. Lithography, which made inexpensive mass-produced prints possible, was invented in 1796. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989; it laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections concerning American cultural history.
