Snapshots of the Past restores historical maps, photographs and prints from the Library of Congress archives for reproduction on fine art and archival paper. Prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last for generations. Founded in 2001, the company says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproductions.
Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography was invented in 1796, allowing posters to be mass-produced at lower cost.
The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989; that project laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections relating to American cultural history. The company's other subjects include old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
Its retro-style prints can be displayed at home, in a study or at work, or given as gifts.
