Snapshots of the Past restores historical maps, photos and prints from Library of Congress archives and makes reproductions on fine art and archival paper with pigmented inks. Founded in 2001, the company says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as fine art reproduction prints.

Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online customers. It was selected as a vendor for the 2008 White House redecoration project. Lithography was invented in 1796, making inexpensive mass production of prints possible.

The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural heritage. The company's reproductions also include old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
