Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make inexpensive mass-produced posters possible. The Library of Congress American Memory pilot project began in 1989 and laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections on American cultural heritage.

The reproductions use fine-art and archival paper; prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last for generations. The range also includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco for display at home or work or as gifts.
