Snapshots of the Past restores historical maps, photos and prints from the Library of Congress archives for home decor.

Founded in 2001, it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of internet customers. The company was selected as a vendor for the 2008 White House redecoration project.

Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make mass-produced poster prints inexpensive. The Library of Congress launched its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections focused on the complexity of American cultural history.

The reproductions use fine-art and archival paper; prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks can last a lifetime and be passed down. The range also includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. Such retro prints can be displayed at home, in a study or at work, or given as gifts.
