The company's historical maps, photographs, and prints are restored from Library of Congress archives and printed on archival paper with pigmented inks.

Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproductions. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of online customers; it was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008.

The company also offers vintage posters, including holiday designs and early aerial views of cities. Lithography was invented in 1796 and helped make mass-produced prints inexpensive. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989; that project laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections about American cultural history.
