Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008.

Lithography, a technique that enabled inexpensive mass-produced prints, was invented in 1796. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989, laying the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections related to American cultural history.

The company's range also includes vintage posters and early aerial views suitable for display at home or work or as gifts.
