Snapshots of the Past makes restored reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints from the Library of Congress archives for home decor. Founded in 2001, it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of Internet customers. The company was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, enabled inexpensive mass production of poster prints. In 1989, the Library of Congress began a pilot project called American Memory. It laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected Library collections emphasizing the complexity of American cultural heritage. The reproductions use fine-art and archival paper brands and pigmented inks. Prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last a lifetime and be passed down through generations. The range includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters, along with early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. The retro-style posters can be displayed at home, in a study or at work, or given as gifts.
