The company makes reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives, using archival paper and pigmented inks.

Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of online customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008.

Lithography, a technique that enabled inexpensive mass production of prints, was invented in 1796. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; the National Digital Library Program followed in 1995 to digitize selected collections concerning American cultural heritage.

The company's retro prints include holiday posters and early aerial views of cities, intended for display at home or work or as gifts.
