T. rex lived during the Late Cretaceous, approximately 68 to 66 million years ago. It reached nearly 40 feet in length and stood 12 feet tall at the hips. It could weigh up to 14,000 pounds and had serrated teeth up to 12 inches long.
Its short arms measured about 3 feet and could lift over 400 pounds. Estimated bursts of speed ranged from 12 to 20 miles per hour. Forward-facing eyes gave it depth perception, its sense of smell could detect prey from miles away, and research suggests it could hear low-frequency sounds. It ate large herbivores, including Triceratops and Edmontosaurus.
Fossils indicate it both hunted and scavenged, with an estimated bite force of over 12,000 pounds per square inch. Fossilized feces show that it consumed and digested bone. Some fossil sites suggest possible group behavior, although it is generally thought to have been primarily solitary, with social contact likely limited to mating or territorial disputes.
T. rex lived until the asteroid impact that ended the Cretaceous period. Fossils known as Sue and Stan remain subjects of research.
