It contains .999 fine Silver and comes in protective plastic. The obverse shows a left-facing bust of Minerva wearing a crested helmet, with a Roman-numeral date at the top of her shield.
“IN GOD WE TRUST” appears above her head, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the upper edge and “TWO TROY OUNCES” along the bottom. The reverse shows an owl on a Ponderosa Pine among cones, with a beaded border separating the design from “PANAMA PACIFIC EXPOSITION” and “SAN FRANCISCO.”
“E PLURIBUS UNUM” appears to the owl's right, “.9999 FINE AU” below, and an “S” mint mark to the right of the lower cone. San Francisco hosted the Panamá-Pacific Exposition to celebrate the opening of the Panamá Canal. The United States Mint struck Silver and Gold commemorative coins for the event, including a $50 round and a $50 octagonal piece.
Apart from patterns and semi-official territorial Gold coins, the United States had not previously issued a $50 Gold piece.
