The Platinum Series example features a hand-lacquered, high-gloss dark walnut cabinet that Tivoli says acts as an acoustically inert housing to support the speaker’s performance. Size and build: At just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep, the Model One is small enough to sit on a desk, nightstand, or dresser while delivering surprisingly strong sound for its dimensions. Tuning and controls: A single rotary dial handles AM and FM tuning; the mechanism uses a 5 to 1 ratio that slows the dial movement relative to knob rotation for more precise station tuning. Separate band selection and volume controls are simple to operate. Between the dials you’ll find a small LED power indicator and an LED that shows signal strength. The light-colored dial face with dark lettering (as on the Platinum Series) makes settings easy to read in low light. Speaker and sound shaping: The front grille protects a single, 3-in full-range speaker driver. Tivoli’s multi-stage frequency contouring circuit adjusts the speaker’s output over half-octave increments for what the company describes as musically accurate tonal balance and improved bass response. Inputs, outputs and antenna: The rear panel includes a coaxial antenna jack for the supplied FM antenna wire and a switch to select between the internal FM antenna and the external antenna for tighter tuning in crowded signal areas. A 3.5 mm headphone jack, a 3.5 mm auxiliary line-in for connecting an iPod or other music source, and a 3.5 mm output port are provided for private listening or use as a component tuner.
