Threads of Life: Autobiography and the Will is a hardcover book by Richard Freadman in All Books. It examines how theological, philosophical and psychological accounts of the human will have appeared in autobiography, and how autobiographical writing has shaped those accounts.

Presented as the first sustained study of this subject, it traces representations of the will from the Greeks and Augustine through Derrida and Barthes, with particular attention to late modernity. Freadman also reads autobiographical texts by Louis Althusser, Roland Barthes, B. F. Skinner, Ernest Hemingway, Simone de Beauvoir, Arthur Koestler, Stephen Spender and Diana Trilling.

He argues that autobiographers exercise varying degrees of agency in their texts and that reflective autobiography can help reexamine contemporary conflicts over freedom, constraint and the will. SKU: sku-199394340.
