Joseph Love The Revolt of the Whip sku-19510057 Hardcover
No rating yet(0 ratings)Joseph Love's The Revolt of the Whip is a hardcover in Latin American History Books. In November 1910, shortly after Brazilian President Hermes da Fonseca's inauguration, ordinary sailors killed several officers, seized major new combat vessels, including two exceptionally powerful battleships, and began bombing Rio de Janeiro.
Led by an Afro-Brazilian, the mostly Black mutineers demanded greater rights, especially an end to flogging in the Brazilian navy, the last Western navy to permit it. The sailors associated flogging with slavery, which Brazil had prohibited only in 1888. The revolt and subsequent scandals prompted sustained debate over race, class and Brazil's claim to be a modern nation.
The country remained divided over the revolt's meaning during its centenary commemoration in 2010. SKU: sku-19510057.
