Volume 40 of the Anchor Bible series offers a translation and commentary on the Apocryphal story of Judith. She saves her people by beheading Holofernes, the Assyrian general sent by Nebuchadnezzar to destroy the Israelites, after winning his trust with flattery and drink.
His troops panic, and her victory brings years of peace. Moore examines whether the story was intended as history or fiction, its historical and theological concerns, and its varied acceptance among Jews and Christians. He also compares Judith with Esther. The book includes photographs and maps, with depictions of Judith by Machiavelli, Botticelli, Caravaggio, and Donatello.
