The A to Z of Russian and Soviet Cinema is a paperback reference to cinema in the Russian Empire, Soviet Union and post-Soviet period, covering both notable films and mainstream filmmaking. It includes cinema from former Soviet republics, including Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Lithuania and Latvia.

Its chronology, introductory essay, bibliography and over 500 cross-referenced entries cover filmmakers, performers, cinematographers, composers, producers, studios, genres and films from 1896 to 2007. The introduction places the work of Eisenstein and Tarkovsky in a history that includes bourgeois cinema in the 1910s, the revolutionary avant-garde in the 1920s, the Thaw in the 1950s and national cinemas in the 1960s and 1970s.

The source describes it as the first English-language reference work devoted entirely to this subject.
