No rating yet(0 ratings)S Torriano Berry's The A to Z of African American Cinema is a Performing Arts Books reference, sku-12401674. It covers hundreds of films, from The Birth of a Nation to Crash, and includes brief biographies of actors and actresses such as Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, Halle Berry, Eddie Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, Denzel Washington and Jamie Foxx.
The book has a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, appendixes, black-and-white photos, and cross-referenced entries on films, people, organizations, awards, film credits and terminology. One film it covers records the fight near Reno, Nevada, on 4 July 1910.
In 100-degree heat, cameras and thousands of spectators watched former heavyweight champion Jim Jeffries reluctantly return from retirement to face Jack Johnson, a black boxer. After 14 rounds, Johnson knocked out Jeffries. The account describes him as the first black heavyweight champion of the world.
White retaliation and street celebrations after the victory left at least 10 people dead and hundreds injured. Public screenings drew immediate protests, and hundreds of cities barred the film. Congress also made it a federal offense to transport moving pictures of prizefights across state lines, making the footage difficult to see.
