In Deindustrializing Montreal, Steven High examines Point Saint-Charles and Little Burgundy, neighbourhoods on opposite sides of the Lachine Canal. Point Saint-Charles was historically a white working-class area with strong Irish and French communities; Little Burgundy is multiracial and home to Montreal's English-speaking Black community. Industry around the canal helped form and divide them. The book links capitalism, class struggle and racial inequality to deindustrialization and its effects on working-class communities. It traces how Point Saint-Charles was later gentrified while urban renewal and highway construction changed Little Burgundy, shaping how residents experienced and remembered urban change. High draws on interviews, archival imagery and original photography by David Lewis to follow both neighbourhoods from their early years to the present. He extends the study of deindustrialization beyond single-industry towns to cities that appear to have made a post-industrial transition, and considers how heritage, race and class shape what gets preserved.
