Poverty and Inequality is a hardcover volume in the Studies in Social Inequality series, listed under All Books as sku-599279525. Contributors Amartya Sen, Martha C. Nussbaum, François Bourguignon, William J. Wilson, Douglas S. Massey and Martha A. Fineman examine current ways of understanding poverty and inequality.

The book argues that research still relies heavily on concepts developed decades ago, even as the structure of global inequality changes. It questions whether conventional poverty indices, rights-based approaches to poverty reduction and traditional models of social mobility equip scholars and policymakers to address current challenges.

The contributors examine how neighborhoods shape poverty and how housing discrimination contributes to it. They also discuss inequality within families, the social evaluation of caretaking, and the argument that inequality can be understood through differences in fundamental human capabilities.

The volume calls for changes in scholarship and policy to address emerging forms of poverty and social exclusion.
