No rating yet(0 ratings)Professor Moon-Kie Jung's Beneath the Surface of White Supremacy: Denaturalizing U.S. Racisms Past and Present (sku-42886644) is listed under Ages 9-12 Kids' Books. Jung argues that racism was neither more obvious in the past nor less potent today.
He examines ingrained racist practices and assumptions in the study of racism from the birth of the United States to the police shooting death of an unarmed Black youth. He connects the 1857 Supreme Court case Dred Scott v. Sandford with current immigration debates and the "war on terror."
He places the 1924 massacre of Filipino sugar workers in Hawai'i alongside statistics on Black economic suffering to examine ignorance and indifference. Jung traces the intertwined histories of Asians, Blacks, Latina/os, and Natives, bringing state violence and colonialism to the fore while questioning the emphasis on assimilation and colorblindness.
The book challenges prevailing assumptions about race and develops concepts and theory for rethinking and resisting racism.
