Zev Eleff All Books | sku-106062962 Dyed in Crimson
No rating yet(0 reviews)Zev Eleff's Dyed in Crimson: Football, Faith, and Remaking Harvard's America, listed under All Books, follows Harvard football coach Arnold Horween and athletic director Bill Bingham. In 1926, Bingham chose Horween, a former Crimson All-American, to coach the struggling team.
They promoted merit over social status and honor and courage over winning, challenging alumni views about who belonged at Harvard and who could claim the American dream. Both were immigrants' sons shaped by the idea that America should reward virtue. Chicago-born Horween had led Harvard to its 1920 Rose Bowl victory as a player.
As coach, he faced opposition from powerful East Coast alumni over his values and Midwestern Jewish background. Eleff traces their student-athlete careers and effort to wrest control of the program from alumni, as well as Horween's challenge to stereotypes of Jewish masculinity amid resurgent antisemitism in the 1920s. This is Edition 1 in hardcover. SKU: sku-106062962.
