A rug pad is recommended to prevent sliding. For indoor rugs, vacuum often with a canister vacuum, preferably without a beater bar, and vacuum high-traffic areas more frequently. Avoid vacuuming fringe.
Blot spills promptly with a clean cloth rather than rubbing. For stains, apply only the foam from a mixture of water, white vinegar and mild detergent, then absorb the residue with a clean cloth; use professional cleaning for difficult stains. For 100 percent viscose rugs, use a carpet sweeper or a vacuum on low power with the beater bar disengaged or raised.
Viscose is a cellulose-derived fiber also called artificial silk. It has a silk-like feel, blends with other fibers and holds vivid dyes, but needs careful cleaning because it is highly absorbent. Blot viscose stains with a clean, damp cloth and mild cleanser if needed. The foam mixture can be used for tougher stains; remove residue with a clean, damp cloth.
A small amount of fabric softener sprayed on the area can help preserve softness. New wool rugs naturally shed. A rug pad reduces friction; vacuum a new wool rug 1-2 times a week for the first few weeks, on low power without a beater bar and in the direction of the pile. Shedding generally diminishes within 4 to 6 months or less.
Clip loose ends or stray loops with scissors rather than pulling them. Shipping creases normally flatten with time; reverse-roll the rug to speed this up. Use protectors under heavy furniture to avoid flattening the pile. Keep the rug out of direct sunlight to limit fading, or shade it with curtains, blinds or UV-blocking window treatments.
Indoor-outdoor rugs use synthetic materials designed to tolerate traffic, dirt, spills and outdoor conditions, but still need regular care. Follow the rug label. Sweep and vacuum them frequently; blot spills without rubbing and sponge the area with a little cold water. Periodically sweep, vacuum and rinse the whole rug with a garden hose.
Dry it over a railing in sunlight, turning it so both sides dry.
