It follows German communist exiles who opposed Hitler in the 1930s, fled through Czechoslovakia to England and were recruited in late 1944 by the London office of the Office of Strategic Services.
Trained for missions into Nazi Germany during the final months of World War II, they took part in the German Penetration Campaign. Some supplied intelligence to advancing Allied armies; others died immediately after their missions were dispatched.
Drawing on declassified East German government files, the book says a few exiles also passed secret mission information and details of OSS sources and methods to an England-based network run by the GRU, the Red Army's military intelligence service, despite the US alliance with the Soviet Union.
The description also notes that US law enforcement officers cited the GRU in connection with the hacking of Democratic National Committee computers and a social media campaign intended to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The US military later learned of the exiles' dual loyalties but posthumously decorated the men who led the missions.
According to the book description, no German national had previously received such medals for service to the Allied armies in World War II.
