In May 1781, talks with Lieutenant General Rochambeau raised Washington’s hopes for operations against the British in New York City.
Washington persuaded the French to pursue New York unless events shifted the focus south, then renewed his appeals for recruits and supplies while American troops on the lower Hudson awaited Rochambeau’s force from Rhode Island. Major General Lafayette sent puzzling news from Virginia: British troops under Lt. Gen.
Charles Cornwallis had moved toward the coast after advancing into the northwestern uplands. Captured mail had alerted British Gen. Henry Clinton to the allied plans, though Washington and his allies did not know it; Cornwallis was positioning his troops to reinforce British forces in New York.
As French troops joined his army, Washington attempted a coordinated attack on the fortifications guarding northern Manhattan. The attack failed, but the armies joined closer to New York City than planned. Washington also dealt with Virginia politics and concerns at home after Martha Washington fell ill and returned to Mount Vernon. SKU sku-5210408510.
