SKU sku-15133682. The book examines race and sex across the French Atlantic through Jean Genet's Les Nègres, first published in 1958 during the Algerian war and first performed at the Théâtre de Lutèce in Paris in October 1959.
More than 50 years later, the book treats the play as a contribution to critical race theory and examines its place in francophone and philosophical writing on race. It discusses Genet's claim that being black is itself a tragedy, placing the play alongside Negritude, African-American dialogue and questions including "Is a black man always black?" and "What is blackness?"
It considers blackness in European ideology, social theory and historical consciousness. The book also examines how French language and continental philosophy have shaped transatlantic ideas about race. Its readings include Lorraine Hansberry's Les Blancs, Dany Laferrière's Comment faire l'amour avec un Nègre sans se fatiguer, Genet's dialogue with the Black Panthers and different uses of the so-called N word.
It argues that Les Nègres presents race as a pervasive discourse around which society is organized and stages a self-reflexive examination of blackness.
