Queer Nations: Marginal Sexualities in the Maghreb is a hardcover by Jarrod Hayes in All Books, SKU sku-147419716. Hayes examines Francophone novels from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, a region inhabited by diverse peoples for millennia. As independence movements gained momentum after World War II, dominant national discourses in these French colonies defined identity through exclusion. A rallying cry from the 1930s was "Islam is my religion, Arabic is my language, Algeria is my fatherland." Hayes shows how novelists imagined inclusive nations through portrayals of marginal sexualities, sexual dissidence and resistance to traditional gender roles, linking anticolonial struggle with sexual liberation. You may also like Queer Roots for the Diaspora: Ghosts in the Family Tree, (Hardcover).
