Portrayed on the Heart: Narrative Effect in Pictorial Lives of Saints from the Tenth through the Thirteenth Century is a hardcover Art Books title by Professor of Art History Cynthia Hahn. This is Edition 1, listed as sku-26791762. Hahn examines illustrated saints' lives made in medieval Europe through manuscripts and other artifacts, many reproduced in the book.

After two chapters on historical and narrative context, she discusses depictions of martyrs and virgins, bishops, monks and abbots, and kings and queens. The book closes with the saints' lives chronicled and illustrated by the English monk Matthew Paris. Hahn considers why these works were made and illustrated, who read them, and how their images and stories changed over time.

She also analyzes their pictorial and narrative structures and the attention their creators paid to audiences.
