Native to swampy areas of the southern United States, including the Mississippi Valley drainage basin, Gulf Coast and coastal plains, bald cypress grows along waterways. Its "knees" rise above water and help provide oxygen and stability in wet conditions.

The tree has soft, feather-like foliage that turns bright green in summer and reddish-brown in fall, and it produces small, ball-like seed structures. It grows about 1-2 feet per year, can reach 120 feet tall and may live up to 600 years. It is suited to zones 4-10, tolerates wet and dry conditions, is not poisonous to pets and needs thorough watering during its first year to establish its roots.
