Architect Paul Tissier (1886-1926) studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, founded the Association symphonique there and became president of the Quat'z'Arts ball. His watercolors and drawings recorded the ruins of the 1914-1918 war.
He developed a catalogue of modular houses inspired by the devastated regions and the Côte d'Azur, combining traditional architecture with modern design. In 1923, the Société des grands hôtels de Nice entrusted him with festivities themed around Russia, the Far East, Ancient Rome, Latin America, underwater kingdoms, childhood, fashion and cubism.
He and his wife Gisèle handled the scenography and staging, including painted canvases, costumes, dances, processions, naval jousts, fireworks and illuminations. Tissier created almost 100 festivities across Europe in three years before his death. This first monograph draws on 400 surviving set elements and 2,000 graphic documents from his archive.
