In June 1940, the U.S. Army requested bids from 135 automakers for a 1/4-ton light reconnaissance vehicle built to Army specifications.

Bantam, Willys and Ford responded and, within a year, produced the template for the jeep. The first Willys MB Jeeps were produced in 1941; the first civilian models followed in 1945. The Willys MB is described as the oldest off-road vehicle, and it inspired light utility vehicles including the Land Rover, described as the second-oldest 4-wheel-drive brand.

Jeep variants have since been made in other countries for military and civilian use.
