No rating yet(0 ratings)Mongers in Heaven: Sexual Tourism and HIV Risk in Costa Rica and in the United States is a paperback by Jacobo Schifter-Sikora, SKU sku-5299203, listed under Diseases. The author calls tourists and expatriates involved in sexual tourism in Costa Rica “mongers” and examines the culture they develop around simulation, lying, marriage, gender roles and sexual freedom.
He studies American senior citizens traveling to Central America seeking sex and love from sex workers, along with the social and economic effects of that travel and HIV infections in the United States and Central America. The book considers the hopes and disappointments of sex workers and their American clients, using quantitative data about both groups and their expectations.
It also applies Jean Baudrillard's theory of simulation and simulacra to the different ideas of reality held by the tourists and Costa Rican sex workers.
