Thor, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appeared in Journey Into Mystery # 83 in the late 60's; writer and artist Walter Simonson later redefined the character. In Thor's origin, Donald Blake finds Mjolnir disguised as a cane in a Norwegian cave.
Striking a boulder with it turns the cane into the hammer and Blake into Thor. Instructions on the hammer explain the change. Thor then stops an alien invasion and goes on to face threats to Midgard and Asgard.
