Alexander Lippisch designed it as an interceptor intended to exceed 1,000 km/h (620 mph). Its largely wooden design called for a rear-mounted jet engine, wings swept at 60 degrees and wingtip ailerons instead of horizontal stabilizers or elevators. German authorities cancelled the project before a prototype was completed, so it never saw combat. Its design later influenced aircraft development in the United States and Soviet Union.
