The brand reproduces historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives on fine art and archival paper, using pigmented inks for prints intended to last for generations. Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints.

Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass production of prints possible.

The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections on American cultural heritage. The brand also offers retro posters, including holiday designs and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, for display or as gifts.
