Snapshots of the Past restores historical maps, photos and prints from Library of Congress archives for home display. Founded in 2001, it says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints; its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers and tens of thousands of internet customers.
It was selected as a vendor for the 2008 White House redecoration project. Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make mass-produced prints inexpensive. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989; that project laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural heritage.
The reproduction uses archival paper and pigmented inks intended to last for generations. The range also includes old holiday posters and early aerial views of cities for homes, studies or workplaces, including prints suitable as gifts.
