Lithography, a technique that made inexpensive mass-produced prints possible, was invented in 1796.

The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural history. The company's range also includes holiday posters, early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, and retro-style prints for display or gifts.
