Snapshots of the Past restores historical maps, photos and prints from Library of Congress archives for reproduction as home decor. Founded in 2001, the company says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online customers.
It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, enabled inexpensive mass-produced prints. The Library of Congress American Memory pilot project began in 1989 and laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections emphasizing the complexity of American cultural heritage.
These reproductions use fine-art and archival paper; prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last for generations. The range also includes vintage holiday posters and early aerial views of cities for display at home or work, or as gifts.
