Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make inexpensive mass-produced posters possible. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; that project laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections focused on American cultural heritage. The reproductions use fine-art and archival papers.

Prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last for generations. The collection also includes old holiday posters and early aerial views of cities, offered for display or as gifts.
