Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008.

Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make mass-produced poster prints inexpensive. A Library of Congress pilot project called American Memory began in 1989 and laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995. That program digitizes selected Library collections focused on the complexity of American cultural heritage.

The reproductions use fine-art and archival papers; prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last a lifetime and be passed down. The range also includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters, early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, and retro-style posters for homes, studies or workplaces. They can also be given as gifts.
