The company reproduces historical maps, photographs and prints restored from Library of Congress archives, using archival paper and pigmented inks intended to last for generations.

Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints. It reports customers including over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of online buyers, and says it was selected as a vendor for the 2008 White House redecoration project.

Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make inexpensive, mass-produced prints possible. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections on American cultural history.

The company's range also includes retro posters for home, study or workplace display and gifts, such as old holiday posters and early aerial views of cities.
