Lithography was invented in 1796; printing techniques enabled inexpensive mass production of posters. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989.

That project laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections emphasizing the complex history of American cultural heritage. The reproductions use fine-art and archival paper from respected brands and pigmented inks intended to last for generations.

The range includes historical maps, photos and prints, including holiday posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, for display at home or work or as gifts.
