Snapshots of the Past makes restored reproductions of historical maps, photos and prints from Library of Congress archives using archival paper and pigmented inks. Founded in 2001, the company says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, as well as tens of thousands of internet customers.
It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project in 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass production of prints possible. A 1989 Library of Congress pilot project called American Memory laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections documenting American cultural heritage.
The company's range also includes vintage holiday posters and early aerial views of cities, intended for display at home or work or as gifts. Prints made with archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to last a lifetime and be passed down.
