The listing also describes lithography as a printing technique invented in 1796 that allowed inexpensive mass production of posters.

The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989; that project laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections emphasizing the complexity of American cultural heritage.

The reproductions use fine-art and archival paper, including prints made with pigmented inks that can last a lifetime and be passed to later generations. Other examples in the range include old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, for display at home, in a study or at work, or as gifts.
