Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers and tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008.

Lithography, a printing method that enabled inexpensive mass-produced posters, was invented in 1796. A Library of Congress pilot project called American Memory began in 1989 and laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections on American cultural history.

The company's other reproduction subjects include holiday posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
