The company restores historical maps, photographs and prints from Library of Congress archives as reproductions on fine-art archival paper with pigmented inks.

Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008.

Lithography was invented in 1796 and enabled inexpensive mass production of prints. The Library of Congress launched its American Memory pilot project in 1989; it laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 to digitize selected collections emphasizing the complexity of American cultural heritage.

Archival paper and pigmented inks are intended to help prints last for generations. The company's range also includes old holiday posters and early aerial views of cities, suitable for display at home or work or as gifts.
