The company reproduces historical maps, photographs and prints restored from Library of Congress archives on fine-art and archival paper, using pigmented inks intended to last for generations.
Founded in 2001, Snapshots of the Past says it was the first company to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproductions. Its buyers have included over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. The company was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008.
Lithography, invented in 1796, helped make poster prints inexpensive to produce in quantity. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989; it laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerned with American cultural heritage.
The range includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters and early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. The prints are offered as decor for a home, study or workplace, or as gifts.
