Snapshots of the Past reproduces historical maps, photographs and prints restored from Library of Congress archives. Founded in 2001, the company says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproduction prints. Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers.

It was selected as a vendor for the White House redecoration project of 2008. Lithography, invented in 1796, made inexpensive mass production of prints possible. The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot project in 1989. It laid the groundwork for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerned with American cultural heritage.

The reproduction is made using fine-art and archival paper from established brands and pigmented inks, materials intended to last a lifetime and allow the print to be passed down through generations.
