Snapshots of the Past reproduces historical maps, photos and prints restored from Library of Congress archives using archival paper and pigmented inks. The company says such prints can last a lifetime and be passed down through generations. Founded in 2001, it says it was the first to offer Library of Congress images as museum-quality fine-art reproductions.
Its buyers include over 200 bookstores and other retailers, along with tens of thousands of internet customers. It was selected as a vendor for the 2008 White House redecoration project. Lithography was invented in 1796 and made inexpensive mass-produced prints possible.
The Library of Congress began its American Memory pilot in 1989; it laid the foundation for the National Digital Library Program, which began in 1995 and digitizes selected collections concerning American cultural heritage.
The company's range includes old Halloween, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day posters, early aerial views of Manhattan, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, and retro-style posters for display or gifts.
